Shakespeare on the Lake

In its 39th season, Shakespeare on the lake has become one of the best things to do in Truckee.  The stage is set up in Sand Harbor, a sandy beach in Incline Village with the stunning backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Great for kids of all ages, bring a blanket and a picnic, sink your toes into the cool sand and be prepared for an awesome night under the stars.  This years production of Twelfth Night runs nightly through August fifteenth.

A couple of things to remember:  Dress warm, get there early, and bring food you can eat easily in the dark.

On a budget and looking for things to do in Truckee with your kids?  The Young Shakespeare Program starts August 1st and provides a free interactive family friendly adaption of the Twelfth night.  These morning performances are sure to please even the pickiest of youngsters.  O, had I but followed the arts!

Trails and Vistas

Have you ever been to Trails & Vistas?

It is a really fun event, especially for kids.  Imagine taking a hike in North Lake Tahoe and along the way seeing art in nature.  The hikes are 2 1/2 miles and they are guided.  Each tour holds a maximum of 30 hikers and yes, it sells out every year.  During the hike, you will come upon live art, dancers and installation art.

It is a very unique experience and one I highly recommend especially for kids.

This year, Trails and Vistas will be on September 17th and 18th 2011 at Spooner Lake in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

Kayak in Truckee

Kayaking is a really fun activity.  We recently went to Prosser Lake, a lake in Truckee that does not allow motorized boats, for some kayaking.

As I write this, the lake is unusually full and you won’t find a lot of places to comfortably hang out by the lake near the boat ramps, but if you venture to other parts of the lake, you can set up an area there.

Prosser Lake is dirt, so don’t go expecting any sand.  The lake is rocky, necessitating water shoes if you are going to walk around.

The perfect reasons to go to Prosser Lake are:

  • To find and use the rope swing
  • To go kayaking
  • To go fishing
  • To go paddle boarding
  • To sit by a peaceful lake and play in the water
  • To hike around and explore nature

It is not a place to go if you don’t like to get dirty …

Have Fun!

A Movie Theater in Northstar

I recently learned that The Village at Northstar opened a two screen movie theater and went to check it out.  We had a blast!

By the way, The Village at Northstar is about 15 minutes from downtown Truckee.  In the off season, there is parking near the village and it is easy to drive.  During holiday weekends and ski season, it gets really busy and you often have to be bused into the village.

The theater is small and has an exclusive screening feel to it.  Because of the size, my guess is that it will sell out on busy holiday weekends but normally, the Village at Northstar is not crowded.

We saw a 4:30pm showing on Cars 2 and then the kids played in the sandbox that sits in front of one of their kids stores.  It was pretty quiet there, normal for off season, so the kids had free reign of the area.  The village itself is beautiful and definatley feels like you are on a vacation.

We ate dinner at the Pizza place there, although I would have gone for Sushi at Mikuni’s if I was in charge.  I like the pizza place.  My one complaint is that they don’t have any crayons or activities for kids, so you will want to bring some things for them to do while you wait for your food.

Another friend of mine recently went there on a date with her husband and had a great time with Sushi and a movie.  They topped the night off by stopping at Moody’s back in town for a bottle of champagne and some desserts.

The Farmers Market

One of the best things about summer in Truckee is the farmers market.  This market brings fresh, locally grown fruit and veges from the valley into Truckee, CA.  It happens every Tuesday morning at Regional Park and you will want to get there before 9:30am for the best pick of the produce (and parking).

But this Truckee farmers market isn’t only fruits and veges, our favorite Indian Food vendor gives us fresh Naan, Samosas and amazing dips.  There is a free-range, organic meat company, freshly made olive oils, local cheeses and more.

This is a must for your dinner table in Truckee.  If you are visiting, experience fresh local strawberries, heirloom tomatoes, organic just picked lettuce and kale and more – it will leave you wanting to find the local fresh farmer’s markets in your area!
